Describing of your dream house.
Mayyy: Describing of your dream house. My house is quite a large detached house situated in the middle of a forest and it has a large garden. The house is very modern and is specially designed to save energy and to be ecological. On the ground floor there is a big hall in the middle of the house. Around the hall, there is the kitchen, the sitting room and the dining room. The most important room in the house is the sitting room where there are lots of bookshelves and some very large, comfortable sofas. On the roof there are solar panels which produce electricity. The house also has got insulation so that it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In the garden there is a pond so that local birds and animals will come near the house. I would like to live in my forest house because it would be very peaceful. I would live there with my family and have lots of space, so that my friends could come to stay with me. It would be a very natural house that would fit in with the local environment.

Mayyy: My favourite film. This episode of the historical drama «Clifton Heights». It is set in Bristol in the 19th century and is about the people who live in a beautiful square. In this episode, Polly`s daughter Charlotte gets lost when they are out shopping in the town centre. Luckily, Sebastian is there to save the day and takes her back. Gemma Harvey (Polly) is convincing as the absent-minded housewife with a secret fantasy life as an actress. However, the performance of Robert Martin (Sebastian), the local police officer is not so good. The old locations are very realistic, and the costumes are excellent. To sum up, this episode was another example of a historical drama with fantastic locations and costumes but a rather dull plot. I certainly would not recommend you to watch it.
Mayyy: Everest. Chomolungma (Everest) is the highest mountain in the world and it is going up a few millimetres every year. It is 8,850 metres high, which is nearly nine km above sea level, the height of twenty Empire State Building or the altitude you are in a jet aeroplane. The first expeditions to climb Everest in 1920s were failures. The climbers, helped by Sherpa guides, were unprepared for the extreme weather conditions and altitude. Despite these disadvantages, in 1924, the British climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine left Camp 6 for the final climb. They `were going strong for the top` at 8,580 metres when they were last seen but they never came down again. Finally, on May 29 1953, the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tensing Norgay became the first men to reach the summit of Everest. Nowadays, climbing Everest and the other thirteen 8,000-metre mountain in the Himalayas is big business. Let`s hope that, in the twenty-first century, we do not ruin the highest, most beautiful mountain on our planet.
Mayyy: Concert. Last Wednesday night, there were over a thousand fans at Cardiff University Great Hall to see Coldplay. There was not an empty seat anywhere in the auditorium and by the time the support band, Ash, started to play, there was already a great atmosphere. When charismatic lead singer, Chris Martin, walked on the stage, the crowd erupted. For the encore, they played and Clocks finished with a fantastic version of In my place. Although the auditorium was cold and the sound sometimes poor, the audience really loved the concert! As we left the auditorium, a lot of people were still singing Life is Living. The concert only lasted an hour and fifteen minutes but it seemed much longer. The band have energy and enthusiasm and give their fans what they want – you can see why they have become one of Britain`s top groups.
Mayyy: Explorers. On 1 June, 1910, Captain Scott left London to begin his Antarctic expedition. On his way, he received a teledram from the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen: «I'm going South.» During the polar summer of 1910-11, both teams organised food depots in preparation for their expeditions. Amundsen was the first to leave, on 16 October, 1911. He had teams of dogs pulling the sledges and all his men were on skis. Because of this, he made rapid progress. Scott left on 1 November and soon had problems. His two motor sledges broke down. Amundsen reached the Pole on 14 December and put a Norwegian flag there. Scott finally arrived at the Pole with his men on 17 January. They were devastated when they saw Norwegian flag. The return journey was one of the worst in the history of exploration. The men were exhausted and were running out of food. Captain Oates and Edgar Evans died in spite of terrible frostbite. After their death Scott and two men carried on and got within eleven miles of one of their food depots. But then a terrible storm started and they could not leave their tent. Scott spent some of his last hours writing letter to his wife. The news of Scott`s death shocked the world. The remarkable courage shown by Captain Scott and his men made them into heroes.
Mayyy: English in the third millennium. On the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Bridget Lewis talks about the future of the English language. Two thousand years ago English did not exist. A thousand years ago it was a language used by less than two million people. Now it is the most influential language in the world. English spoken by more than a billion people on the planet. English currently dominates science, business, the mass media and popular culture. For example, 80% of e-mail on the Internet are in English. But where will English be at the end of third millennium. One view is that English is going to become even more important as a global lingua franca, dominating the world’s trade and media while most other language will become localised or just die out. At present, over half the world’s 6,500 languages are in danger of extinction. Another view is that English is already breaking up into several separate language. Hopefully, neither of these things will happen. Although different varieties of English will continue to develop around the world, standard English will survive for international communication. In addition, the frightening prospect of a culturally uniform world totally dominated by one language is impossible. Already, other languages are fighting back against the iron grip of English on the Net. Governments around the world are also starting to protect smaller languages and recognise the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity. English will probably stay in control for a long time, at least while the USA remains the top superpower, but it definitely won’t become the only language in the world.
Mayyy: Holidays. I'd like to tell you about my summer holidays I spent in Sochi. It was just three years ago. My parents and me were sitting in the living-room discussing our plans for the summer holidays. My father suggested that we should go to Sochi. On hearing that I jumped up with joy and said it was a wonderful idea. My mother wasn't against the idea either. So one summer morning we started for our journey to Sochi. First, we travelled to Odessa by plane and from there we got to Sochi by boat. We stayed in Odessa for three days, our relatives live there and they gave us board and lodging. So we had an excellent opportunity to go round the city, to see beautiful monuments to the famous people who had lived in Odessa, museums and the Odessa Opera House. We enjoyed our trip from Odessa to Sochi. The Black Sea was calm. We sat on deck in the lounge chairs and looked at the sea. I like Sochi very much, we bathed and went boating and swim-ming, lay in the sun on the beach. In the evenings we went for a walk or dropped in at a cafe to have ice-cream or juice. My father showed us the famous Botanical Gardens, we went for hikes in the mountains, we saw the magnificent Augura Waterfalls. The sea was nice and warm. The weather was fine. When it was time to go home, we were sorry to leave the marvellous town of Sochi.
Mayyy: London As well as being the capital of England, London is the Capital of the United Kingdom. London was founded by the Romans in 43 A.D. and was called Londinium. In 61 A.D. the town was burnt down and when it was rebuilt by the Romans it was surrounded by a wall. That area within the wall is now called the City of London. It is London`s commercial and business centre. It contains the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange and the head offices of numerous and corporations. Here is situated the Tower of London. Today London is great political centre, a great commercial centre, a paradise for theatre-goers and tourists, but it is also a very quit place with its ancient buildings, museums and libraries.
Mayyy: Wales Wales is a country situated in the West of Britain. St. David is the patron saint of Wales. On 1 st March, St. David’s Day, patriotic Welsh people wear a leek or a daffodil, both symbols of Wales. The population of Wales is about three million. The area of Wales is 20,764 sq. km. Wales is agricurtural, there are few cities there, rather small and unimportant. The west coast, mid Wales and North Wales are wild and beautiful. Wales has high mountains, including Mount Snowdon, the second highest mountain in Britain. Snowdon looks very peaceful and beautiful. Cardiff, the modern capital of Wales, has a Roman castle and a modern shopping centre. Cardiff is an industrial city, which also has a cathedral, a university. Every year, an international festival called Eisteddfod is held in the town of Llangollen. People come from all over the world to recite poetry, sing and dance in this colourful competition. There are two national languages in Wales - the Welsh language, which is spoken widely, especially in the North of the country and English. Both these languages are taught in schools. There is also Welsh and british TV channels. Rugby is the national game of Wales. The rules of the game are quite difficult. A team consists of fifteen players. The game is played with an egg-shaped ball. There are three National Parks in Wales. These parks are protected by law because of their natural beauty, but some people live and work there. The flag of Wales, with its red dragon, is one of the oldest in the world. It was brought to Britain by the Romans. The Welsh call their country Cymru and themselves Cymry, a word which has the same root as a “camrador” (friend, comrade).
Mayyy: Mass Media There are many different ways to get knowledge about our big world. It is mass media, travelling, museums, meeting with interesting people, etc. People all over the world enjoy books. Books are our friends and teachers. We can learn a lot of interesting and useful things from the books. Many people choose traveling as the way to know the world. I enjoy it too. It's very fun and interesting! Every year I travel to another place than last year, and I like it: new places - new impressions! The mass media have done and continue doing much to excite an interest in every aspect of the country's life. The mass media are the various ways by which information and news is given to large numbers of people, especially television, radio, newspapers and magazines. The mass media now play an important role in shaping our opinions. I think, it is impossible to imagine our life without newspapers. Millions of copies of them appear every day. Many people subscribe to two or more newspapers; others buy newspapers at the newsstands. There are national daily newspapers, such as the "Izvestiya", and the "Komsomolskaya Pravda". There are also national weekly newspapers, such as the "Argumenty i Fakty" and the "Nedelya". Most national newspapers express a political opinion, and people choose them according to their political beliefs. Most newspapers contain news, detailed articles on home and international affairs, reviews of books, art and TV shows. Many of them also cover sports events. In the USA daily newspapers are published in 34 different languages. The daily newspapers are of two kinds: quality and popular. A quality paper is a serious newspaper, which publishes articles and commentaries on politics. A popular paper contains many photographs; its articles are often sensational and mostly deal with private life of famous people. "The Wall Street Journal" is a quality paper. It is a business newspaper with the largest circulation in the country. There are also newspapers in the USA, which are famous all over the world for their quality. "The New York Times" is "the world's top daily".
Mayyy: Around the world in 80 days. Recently I have seen a film named Around the world in 80 days. It is a comedy adventure film based on the so called Jules Vernes novel. But, the film is amasing and much more funnier. Most of all because of star membership. For examle, the main characters are Jackie Chan and Steve Cogan. Steve Cogan is an inventor. He is a good scientist inspite of some slippings in his career. However, he was able to invent a ballon which flies. During his trip he was accompanied by Jecky Chan. Although his hero was in trouble with the police, he could managed with all his problems and moreover with a comic accent. To sum up the trip was full of fun and film made you laugh all the time. It is worth seeing just for your good mood.
